super fun day of randomness

I turned a year older last week and I must say, it was somehow weird that I felt bored about the whole thing. I didn't know how I would celebrate it and whom I would celebrate it with, as proved by this conversation.

Ma: Gusto mo magdinner mamaya? (Do you want to go out for dinner tonight?)
Moi: Ehhh... bukas na lang, may gagawin kasi ako ngayon. (Ehh, let's just go out tomorrow, I'm doing something today.
Ma: O sige. Gusto mo tawagan ko sila Tita J? (Ok then. Do you want me to invite Tita J?)
Moi (in a bored whiny tone): Maaa.
Ma: Eh gusto mo tawagan ko friends mo? (How about I call your friends?)
Moi (more bored and whiny tone): Maaaaaaaa!
Ma: (leaves)

Yet in between those pockets of weirdness, boredom, and indecisiveness still lay a bit of excitement that it was my birthday. Yeah cos I'm strange like that. or maybe that's a sign of aging?! You tell me.

For all that was stuck in my head that day was that I had to work. It is not that bad however, because the person I was doing business with is a good friend of mine. The 100 million dollar question was what to do after that. I had no idea, and I didn't really care. I could have gone straight home if I wanted. But I didn't. A trip was in order since my friend F and I wrapped up by merienda time. How convenient is that, yeah? It was just the beginning of a simple yet fun celebration.

The trip we went on was so random, it became one of the highest-ranking random manila trippings F and I have ever done. First up, we went to a Taoist temple which I promptly forgot the name of. All I remember is that is it's located on Adriatico St. We were the only visitors in the temple at that time. F lit some incense while I looked around to admire the ornately decorated place. We took some photos afterwards and then left.

F and I continued walking along Adriatico until we reached Padre Faura. We then proceeded to Solidaridad bookshop, which is owned by premier Filipino writer F. Sionil Jose. An aria playing softly from the speakers and the cool, gentle blast from the airconditioner greeted us as we entered the bookshop. Oh, I was in heaven. Even if I didn't have any plans of buying a book, just the fact that I am surrounded by lots of books is enough for me. Browsing through shelves is just as enjoyable as purchasing a book that catches my fancy.

But of course, my reader's nose is just too keen that I found the book written by my beloved high school English teacher stacked in one of the displays in the bookshop. I immediately snapped one up without batting an eyelash, making it the first "expensive" book I've bought in years. (if it satisfies your curiosity, I love bargain bookstores. My cheapest find to date was sold for five pesos. ha!)

So. have I mentioned that it was merienda time? A trip, even a mini one at that, would not be complete without food. So we left the comforting coolness of the bookshop and tripped over to Hizon's in J. Bocobo St. for a late afternoon snack. An institution which was established in 1946, Hizon's boasts of its cakes and pastries. They also offer sumptuous selections for breakfast, lunch and dinner that it is no wonder that the great Philippine comedian Dolphy considered Hizon's his favourite place to eat.

Our merienda consisted of toasted special ensaymada with queso de bola, special halo-halo with a scoop of ube ice cream and a slice of chocolate cake. I know, it's sugar rush galore! I especially loved the grilled ensaymada. The bun has a light and flaky texture that gives it its melt-in-your-mouth character, and has just the right amount of sweetness that blended beautifully with the subtle saltiness of the grated cheese. Needless to say, F and I left Hizon's with satisfied tummies, and planning the next food trip at this place.

Some people celebrate their birthdays the whole month long. Some celebrate on their birth week. some just on the day itself, and some don't even celebrate at all. So far the only type I haven't tried doing yet is celebrating the whole month. Oh well. Just the thought of it makes me feel tired already. (uh-oh, another sign of aging, perhaps?) Well, all I want is a simple, fun, and random (if this is applicable) celebration with family and select friends in one of my happy places. It's my kind of recipe.

P.S. One funny thing that happened on that day was I actually asked F what the date was. Now if that's not a sign of aging, I don't know what is.

P.P.S. Top two photos taken in the Taoist temple; bottom left and center photos, Solidaridad bookshop; bottom right, gate at aurora plaza where Solidaridad is located. sorry, no photos of the scrumptious feast. Here's a  link to a photo of the toasted ensaymada tho. :)

Sunday Smiles

My email inbox automatically refreshed to reveal that another reader has favourited a fanfic of mine. Yippee! This old gal is giddygiddygiddy.

================

A Facebook chat with some college friends revealed another bookworm amongst us. One friend didn't strike me before as someone who liked books and it's just a really lovely surprise to learn that she does! How funny to learn that little factoid now several years after graduation. We just never got around to talking about books I guess. Hooray for bookworms!

================

Parents got back safely from Roxas City. I can resume my remembrance tactics. Hohoho.

================

Weekend consisted of cleaning the house, watching tv and reading. I'd say it was a weekend well-spent. The very nice weather is a great contributing factor to this as well. :)

And oh, this video!

that's all, folks!

Planning to Get Hitched on Valentine's? Think Again.

Ahh, the day of hearts is nigh! But because I have no time nor the stomach to rhapsodize about love-and-all-that-mush I'll cut to the chase and state my

Reasons why getting married on Valentine's day is a bad idea:

1. It's corny.

2. It's cheesy.

3. Most people you know apart from your immediate family will be too busy spending V-day on their own leisure to be celebrating your wedding anniversary with you. So you decide to celebrate it on the weekend where the 14th is nearest. Kind of defeats the purpose why you got married on V-day, now doesn't it? You can't even celebrate it with your other loved ones. There is an upside to this however. You and your spouse can have the whole day all to yourselves. (Along with other cheesy, mushy couples who just have to celebrate V-day together. Oh, puh-leeze. *insert rolling eyeballs here*)

And the most important thing to mull over:

4. With regards to your immediate family: When your kids are all grown, they will be torn whether to spend the day with their own special someones or to celebrate your wedding anniversary with you. Wouldn't that be just too mean of you?

Consider this scenario:

Grown-up Kid: I'm sorry, I can't celebrate Valentine's with you.
Special Someone: What?! Why?
GuK: It's my parents' wedding anniversary. We're going out for dinner.
SS: Can I come with you?
GuK: Um, you can't. They want to celebrate it with just the family.
SS: If you won't let me come with you, I'm going to break up with you!
GuK: Ermmm...

Or this scenario...

GuK: I'm sorry, I can't celebrate Valentine's with you.
SS: What?! Why?
GuK: It's my parents' wedding anniversary. They're celebrating their twenty-fifth year together so we're going to have a party.
SS: What?! But we're going out on Valentine's day.
GuK: You can come to the party and be my date. (toothy smile but faltering inside)
SS: I won't! I want it just to be the two of us!
GuK: But...
SS: It's me, or them. Take your pick.

Dun-dun-dun-dunnnn...

...Or this scenario:

GuK: I'm sorry, I can't celebrate Valentine's with you.
SS: What?! Why?
GuK: It's my parents' wedding anniversary.
SS: No! I'm breaking up with you right now!

Scenarios like the ones above can even be reversed:

GuKs: Mum, Dad, we're sorry but we won't be able to join you on your anniversary.
Mum and Dad: What?! Why?
GuKs: We already have something planned with our SSes.
Mum: You ungrateful children! Have you forgotten the pain and agony I went through for nine months until I gave birth to you?!
GuKs: Um... we don't exactly remember... There are photos though...
Dad: Oh, dear wife. Our kids are all grown up now. Just let them be.
Mum: Husband! You have no sense of family whatsoever. Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, so on and so forth till the world's end, amen. End of discussion.

Yes, the kids lose. Big time. (sometimes the spouses lose too, just to be fair.)

In an ideal world, everyone gets into a compromise and everyone ends the day with all smiles. Don't we all wish that all stories end like that? Unfortunately that ideal world is but a dream.

So yeah. To couples out there deciding on The Date, do not get hitched on February 14th. Ever. That will just be too mean and selfish for you to do so. For the sake of your future kids' lovelife. Just don't.

i dreamed i was in disneyland. you know how a familiar place becomes weird-looking in your dream, but in your subconscious/heart you know that it's that same exact place you know in real life? (you know?? LOL) well that's what disneyland was like in my dream. the rides were very different and the mascots didn't exactly look like the disney characters but in the dream they were them. so anyway my cousin and i were about to get on a water flume ride in which the cars look like alligators. my cousin succeeded in getting on the ride and i only succeeded in getting my pants seat wet by sitting on the side of the water flume. i felt something keeping me from enjoying the ride and i guess that's because i left my chuck taylors somewhere so i just had to go back (wherever that is) and get them. i scoured the whole park for my shoes (even entering a building where i had to pay $4.99 for a robot live-action show i wasn't going to watch) but to no avail. then i woke up. the end.

Managing Your Inner Monologue (Not Exactly a Self-Help Article)

Running inner monologue. This is something that people of the introvert sort are said to possess. However, I think everyone has this, only it's just more pronounced in introverts as they are more silent than others. But that silence is just on the surface; on the inside introverts are as loud as they can be. So many thoughts running through their minds, constantly tumbling, jumbling together into one organised mess that no one else could understand but them and their select peers.

Sometimes having a running inner monologue is comforting and entertaining. Sometimes it can get really annoying. And when it does so, you can't help but wish it had a pause or stop button. Or maybe a volume control. The good news is that it can be very easily managed. So for everyone out there who are having issues with their inner monologues, here are simple tips on how to manage your running inner monologue and even have fun with it:

1. Write. Yes, that's the first thing anyone should do when the inner monologue gets loud enough that you practically cover your ears to silence it. Your pen and notebook (or laptop if you prefer it) are your very best friends here. They're good listeners, they're silent, and they can go on and on without telling you to stop. Writing about what goes on in your head can give you ideas for stories. It brings out your creative side. Weave odes and tales that only your inner monologue and imagination can provide. They may come out as inspired and brilliant no matter what mood you are in when you write them. Or not. But who cares, what matters is that you managed to bring out your thoughts. That's what blogs (for sharing) and journals (NOT for sharing!) are for. Think of them as your own personal pensieve. Writing not your thing? Then...

2. Draw. Bring to life the inner recesses of your thoughts with your art. Light or dark, deep or comical, you'll never go wrong. Drawing stick figures and simple shapes is highly encouraged. Let your imagination go wild with your pencil, pen, crayons, oil pastels, paints, or what-have-you. Splash your world with colours. Thinking of animating your creations? Then take it to the next level, take an animation class. No one's going to hinder you. Maybe except for your resources. Bottom line, just draw. Period. (Other art forms are also very welcome.)

3. Talk. This can be a bane to people who find talking a tedious task. However, it can also be a boon because there's nothing like that light feeling afterwards of having unloaded your thoughts. Sharing what's in your mind goes very well with coffee and pastry. A word of caution though when you dare to tread in these waters. You have to take into consideration the possibility that the person you talk to might find you inane, trivial, or worst, loony because you look like you're just talking to yourself. So choose your person very well along with that coffee and pastry. When you've done so, then you've got the best combination ever. Ever, ever, ever.

more things that i'm thankful for:

2. phase one of christmas cooking: done!
3. achieved cleaning and fixing my bookshelf. now i have more space for my new old books. ha.
4. lily allen's version of somewhere only we know, which is one of my favourite songs. she did a great rendition of it. love listening to it in the deep of night. :)
5. new old phone.
6. watched frozen for the second time. i can never get enough of it. after beauty and the beast and mulan, frozen is my newest fave disney animated movie.

thankful twenty

christmas season has indeed descended upon la manille. along with the rush of christmas shopping come the inevitable hordes of people in malls and horrendous traffic trapping people in vehicles... or leaving people stranded on the streets and scrambling for seats in jeepneys and buses. it's so easy to let my inner grinch out at this unfortunate yearly happening. but because i am i try hard to be considerate of people, i stay indoors as much as possible during the christmas rush... i'm just sorry that my cohabitants are the ones unfortunate to experience my grinchiness though. so what to do, what to do? focus instead on the finer, simpler joys that are so easy to overlook when emotions run high.

i've done this list in my old blog some six years ago, and then in my good old journal. these lists of gratitude are way better to read in the future than keeping a list of wrongs. and so, here is my pre-yearend list, randomly listed but the number 1 is really the first. hehe.

1. the back rub a kid gave me when i was so ready to collapse during the christmas show where i was an assistant stage manager. (my first time to be one so i was so strung up)
2. the kids knew their cues. when to get ready and when to get onstage.
3. was able to have a nice dinner and chat with an old friend.
4. arrow's episode 8 (the scientist)!!! :)
5. my sample writing was chosen among others for a writing gig. first time to do that kind of writing too. humbled and awed.
6. the opportunity to be there for a friend.
7. was able to have at least a civil conversation with friend and son.
8. lovely reviews on my fanfiction. tee-hee. ^_^
9. shane filan's everything to me. oh my, i got a lot of warm, fuzzy feels from this song. :)
10. taylor swift's 22. definitely, absolutely my song of the year.
11. frozen. what's not to love about that movie?? and i've discovered my new favourite disney princess. (queen elsa)
12. had a lot of great help from my cousin and nephew at the christmas show even if they were a bit hard to rein in. haha.
13. david baldacci's the sixth man. the woman who got ahold of the book first didn't buy it after all, so i did. thanks a lot, dear lady. one more book and my king and maxwell collection will be complete. :)
14. catching fire. i could hardly breathe during this 2.45 hours movie. i love it!
15. arrow!!! :D
16. glorious napping in the afternoon... for four hours. is that still considered napping?? ;p
17. a bed and a soft, fluffy pillow.
18. two snail mail from friends arrived in the mail yesterday! yahoooooooooooooooooooooo~
19. a new cell phone (a lovely hand-me-down from my bro).
20. the opportunity to make this list.

what a good time to remember all the good things that happened this year. again this is only a partial list and it spans 3 months. i have a lot of things to be thankful for this year. and among them would be the likely chance of sleeping soundly tonight even with the neighbours are singing on the videoke. ha.

advance happy christmas, y'all :)

randoms

spent the whole day yesterday doing ultra-girly stuff that i never thought i'd do--learning how to put on make-up. in the company of bubbly and makukulit mommies. conversations in between putting on primers, foundations, and other assorted powders and creams were peppered with local showbiz gossip, recent political brouhahas, and of course, stories of the kiddies which i enjoyed listening to.

it was an unusual day indeed for this old lady here. unusual, but totally fun.

i suddenly found myself thinking of what kind of cosmetics i should buy to prettify myself with.

level up girl, level up.

HA!

it was windy all friday night. then it rained all day yesterday. the rain went on until today. love the cold.
