thankful ten (or maybe twenty)

this post is normally put up by new year's and not around christmas time but i felt like this is the perfect time to do so. my heart is full to bursting and for this old girl that's a good thing.

so many things have happened this year and left me with memories that will last for a lifetime.

again, i am using holley gerth's printable for this because i need to organise my usual stormy thoughts.

God, I'm especially grateful for...
1. Person / People I love: 1. family is already a given. but balikbayan family is something else, especially my tita who i love so much and consider a best friend and not just my aunt. am so happy she's here even for a short time. 2. the new people i met this year whom i've gotten close with and had the opportunity to minister to. no, i didn't know at that time because i was feeling sorry for myself during a particular turbulent time. but when i spoke to my friends D, E, and F (yes those are their initials lol), well, that put things in perspective.

2. Blessing I've received: this year is such a blessing. a rollercoaster ride, to say the least. but a blessing through and through. i wouldn't have it any other way.

3. Something small that brings me joy: stretching out on the couch and staring out into the blue beyond. at least, a small slice of blue sky the living room windows afford me.

4. A favourite memory from this year: this year is one big memory but if we're going into specifics, then it's the following: getting my green belt in arnis; meeting up with F after a long time, wherein she said i needed the debriefing more than she did on that night lol; out of town trip with my bro and cousins to la union; meeting my director after almost ten years; the chance to become someone's sounding board, and of course spending time with my beloved tita.

5. Your provision (ex. Health, house): work is a big thing for this old girl this year. continuing good health after my doctor declared me hyperthyroidism-free last may. that was the best birthday gift i received this year.

6. This prayer You answered: work. it's not something i expected that i would do but i did accept the offer. never knew i had the knack for it but there it is. and i like it, never mind that my office is located in makati. never mind that this is in a corporate setting which is something that i have evaded for more than fifteen years. like i told an applicant months before, it's the learnings and experiences are what i like about working there. this has been a big blessing to me more than i ever knew. next would be my green belt in arnis. this is a sport that i will continue until i cannot anymore. but i still hope that that wouldn't happen. i'd like to see myself in my 60s, 70s and 80s still kicking butt in anyo. hehe.

7. Who you are (ex. Caring, strong, kind): if anyone wants to know any good side of mine, better ask my friends. Although I can say I'm a good listener. Cos my friends say so. and i think it's the only thing i can offer to anyone.

8. Who I am because of You (ex. Loved, accepted): loved, accepted, saved. Sometimes though I can still be really stubborn to the point of being stupid. Oh dear.

9. One thing I have to look forward to next year: like always, i never expect anything. not anymore. even with hope nagging in my brain.

10. Open - Whatever is on my heart today: hope is really something. i've written about what a nag hope is/was these past couple of years even when i ended them with a pessimistic, noteless tune. but looking back at the year that was, well, i could see where hope had gotten me. hope, and waiting on the Lord. all the things i'm doing now are not because of my own strength and smarts; they were rendered practically irrelevant. i had nothing to cling on to except relying on God, and trusting Him to see me through. these are two things that i have admittedly rarely done in the past. but how wonderful it is to realise that He still used my smarts and strength for me to accomplish new things. all these i give back all the praises to Him. yes, that's still about work. haha. and i would also like to add that it is in this season of my life that i had the opportunity to minister to the people around me. so i do believe this is where i'm supposed to be until God calls me to somewhere else.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

We give You thanks. (Rev. 11:17)

sunday currently vol. 46

Currently...

reading: still the graveyard book by neil gaiman. but i finished one online book recently.

writing: all the words needed to be written down are still in my head. it's my annual yearend chorva, 2019 reads and playlist, and quite possibly my sort of annual thankful twenty post.

listening: to nothing except the glorious silence. i'm expecting more of it tomorrow as most people in the metro would be on holiday mode, yours truly included.

thinking: of opening the bag of ruffles jalapeño ranch. of the things to do tomorrow, which is a LOT. haven't had time the past few weeks for my christmas shopping so it was only today that i was able to do so. and it's just for the kids still!

smelling: nothing.

wishing: for 8 hours of undisturbed sleep. the kind of sleep in which i'll wake up from really well-rested.

wearing: sleep wear because oh, it's bedtime.

loving: the the extremely chocolatey milk chocolate rounds from marks and spencer. so happy i stuck to this gift! this is actually the third and last package of marks and spencer cookies that i opened to eat. and it's extremely chocolatey indeed as there's more chocolate than cookie. yum-yum!!!!!

wanting: to sleep... heheheh

needing: for these allergies to cease.

feeling: exhausted. am not even sorry i wasn't able to go to two christmas parties i was invited to for today. cos if i did, i really won't be able to do any shopping.

sunday currently vol. 45

Currently...

reading: the graveyard book by neil gaiman. this would be one of the last ones i'll be reading this year. other books in my to be read pile are still waiting. but soooo happy i only bought 3 books this year: red's untold tale, regina rising, and long road to mercy. hey. that is a feat in itself!

writing: umm. this? lol.

listening: to different jazz versions of angels we have heard on high. so loving these!

thinking: of this coming week. thinking of the menu for our noche buena. thinking of last night's awesome south east asian games opening. thinking of oh, so many more stuff, again it's a miracle my head hasn't exploded from overthinking.

smelling: nothing.

wishing: for these allergies to cease! i can't stand sneezing five times in a row anymore, and that's just the minimum. my nose and eyes itch so much.

wearing: sleep wear because oh, it's bedtime.

loving: the seagames opening.

wanting: anything from my kris kringle wish list. hehehe.

needing: for these allergies to cease.

feeling: fine even if i only spent a short time in the house this weekend. agreeing to go to the seagames opening is a great decision. i was even able to breathe fresh air and see lots of green fields.

===================

so excited for christmas.
and then i'll be seeing my tita again!
also can't wait to see some friends i've made plans with.

food

was browsing through an old blog of mine and saw this food meme from 2007. yes, before today's memes were the memes, questionnaires such as this were referred to as such. oh. well. since am too bored and enjoying the silence, thought filling this out again would be fun. current answers in italics.

----------------

What were you cooking/baking 10 years ago?
rice, eggs, hotdogs, spam, instant noodles--pathetic ain't it? i didn't cook much then lol.

now: have already forgotten. basta anything that is substantial because hello, we need to eat! :P

What were you cooking/baking one year ago?
any kind of pasta alla carlotta and roast chicken

now: this one's easy. vegan/paleo pancakes and crepes, vegan ice cream, anything without dairy, seafood, and iodised salt. feel free to browse through the melodrama of last year.

Five snacks you enjoy:
1) pizza
2) double cheeseburger!
3) potato chips bbq flavor any brand
4) shredded cod from aji ichiban or any other fish sticks in the grocery (forgot the name)
5) corn on the cob slathered with butter and a dash of cayenne pepper

now:
1. potato chips jalapeño ranch flavour
2. cheeseburger
3. fries
4. corn any way
5. cheese sticks

Five recipes you know by heart:
1) pasta alla carlotta ;-)
2) roast chicken
3) roast beef
4) fish fillet alla carlotta
5) beef alla carlotta
("alla carlotta" -- recipes i invented. i know, how creative. üüü)

now:
1. chicken curry
2. pork adobo 3 ways
3. tuna couscous salad
4. spaghetti bolognese
5. cheeseburger surprise

Five culinary luxuries you would indulge in if you were a millionaire:
1) steak
2) prawns
3) lobsters
4) pannacotta
5) rack of lamb

now:
1. lemon butter tiger prawns over quinoa
2. medium rare kobe beef steak with roasted garlic mashed potatoes
3. funny what twelve years does to you. i really don't care anymore about culinary luxuries. the culinary world has been hyped up so much that all my interest in trying out new eats has waned over the years. i don't even think that quinoa would go well with lemon butter prawns. guess this is just jaded old moi talking.

Five dishes you love to cook/bake:
1) brownies
2) chocolate chip cookies
3) banana bread
4) lasagna
5) other dishes alla carlotta

now:
1. anything that involves coconut milk and lemongrass
2. pasta
3. anything that would involve gravy
4. i would still love to bake brownies and chocolate chip cookies but since our oven is busted, i would have to bake cookies stovetop style. which i was able to last year.
5. i would still really love to cook but am just so exhausted lately. i'd rather stretch out on the couch and stare at nothing, while my mind travelled to worlds others not dare tread into.

Five dishes you cannot/will not eat:
- cannot write anything here as i might change my mind after. =)

now:
that sentence above is true. at that time i didn't like okra but around 2013 i had no choice but to eat it since a friend served it as our lunch. since it was cooked with ground pork and the whole dish was just so yummy, i got over the sliminess pretty quickly and now i enjoy okra steamed and dipped in ketchup. ha. but i still won't eat tamilok (wood worms) even if someone paid me a million bucks.

Five favorite culinary toys:
wire whisk
mortar and pestle (i pound the garlic to the beat of the music. try it, it's fun! ü)
chopping board
set of knives
electric chopper (only when i'm too lazy to chop onions and garlic, which is rare)

now:
1. wire whisk
2. mixing bowl
3. chopping board
4. santoku knife
5. blender (hopefully will be able to buy a food processor soon!!!)

Five dishes for your "last meal" menu:
1) super supreme pizza with extra extra cheese
2) double bacon cheeseburger with all the trimmings
3) hot, steaming sinigang na baboy with rice
4) a big platter of sushi
5) joey's new york cheesecake

now
1) pizza with extra extra cheese and mozzarella stuffed crust.
2) double bacon cheeseburger with all the trimmings, doused in more melted cheese
3) hot, steaming sinigang na baboy with rice
4) a big platter of sushi
5) starbucks cinnamon swirl cheesecake

Five happy food memories:
1) eating dinner (which we bought the ingredients from the market and cooked the dishes ourselves) outdoors with friends on one holy week outing in san fabian, pangasinan. we ate in mismatched plates, lacked utensils so we ate with our hands. and yeah, got rice straight from the bamboo leaf. this is the best dinner i've had.
2) at cyma (greenbelt branch) where me and me friends heidz, lay and jeng ate the fastest dinner but not without savoring what we ate--swordfish kebab (really tender and juicy without the malansa taste), moussaka and roka salata... we were the last to get a table at the time and the first one to leave the restaurant--that's how hungry we were (and we forgot to take pics of the food!)
3) tapsilog at rodick's in UP then cheesecake at chocolate kiss after (if we still have dough). =)
4) baking fruit cake with my lola
5) spontaneous food trips with friends

now:
1. coffee/dinner dates with friends and just talking about life.

-----------------------------

yup. twelve years is such a long time. i'm amazed at the changes and those that remain constant. at least where food is concerned. ha.

smelling: nothing.

this past week has been one emotional upheaval after the other.
that's all.

sunday currently vol.43

Currently...

reading: nothing yet although i just finished reading neverwhere by neil gaiman this morning. a review from san diego union-tribune states how it's the stuff of dreams and nightmares. i totally agree on that. it's a very descriptive book that reminds me of my own dreams and how i narrate it to my brother, much to his consternation as he got older and eventually sick of listening to my tales of my vivid dreams ('how can you remember every single detail???' he often says in disbelief). i also like the cover from the 2016 edition, which is illustrated by robert mcginnis. it's what caught my eye in the bookstore many months ago. the copy i have on hand with that particular cover was graciously lent to me by an officemate who also shares my love for fiction.

writing: oh dear me. i've been stuck in the writing rut since forever.

listening: to stone cold by demi lovato. oh my heart, how i love this song. it's the first song of demi's that i really took notice of back in 2016 because of its melody. it is described in wikipedia as a soul sentimental ballad. much like my strange affinity for the melody on let's hang on's line 'got a lot o' love between us', i love how demi sang the line 'if happy is her, i'm happy for you'. the song is just fairly new that it doesn't have a lot of versions/covers like let's hang on or else i've had created a playlist dedicated to it. i do have a favourite live version of stone cold which is the one from billboard's women in music. there is so much emotion in how demi sings it, the listener would have to have a heart of stone not to feel all that pain in the song. and let me just say that this is one of the songs in this millennium that i don't need to check out the lyrics websites for, well, the lyrics. the song is just that good, and demi slays it every single time, may it be live or recorded.

thinking: of vacations in faraway places

smelling: nothing.

wishing: on nothing.

wearing: sleepwear. duh.

loving: the song stone cold. lol.

wanting: i don't know what i want at the moment. maybe just a restful sleep.

needing: stone cold has replayed ten times already but i really have no idea what i currently need.

feeling: cold. literally. nothing to do with my current ultimate lss, thank you very much.

oh. will i end this post without sharing the video of my latest (old) favourite song? of course not. hit play!

sunday currently vol. 42

Currently...

reading: some fanfiction i've already read last year although i've started on miss marple the complete short stories by agatha christie as well.

writing: should i even mention what i'm currently writing???

listening: to laughter in the rain by neil sedaka but in my head. been playing it on the uke earlier this evening and then on my toy piano when i got home.

thinking: of oh, so many things that my heart is in my throat.

smelling: nothing.

wishing: it were the 14th already because it means the event on the 13th will already be over.

wearing: sleepwear. duh.

loving: that my coach told me my form and flow (arnis) has improved a lot. and that's even after three consecutive saturdays of not being able to attend the training.

wanting: the 13th to be over and done with already but of course not without everyone having the time of their lives celebrating the company's anniversary.

needing: everything to fall into place and for the event to be a success. oh, and more sleep.

feeling: like my heart is in my throat about everything. ha.

Sunday, 28 July 2019

sunday currently vol. 41

currently...

reading: some fanfiction that i happen to like. then i took a book from my to be read pile which is the next thing i'm going to read for the week. it's called miss marple the complete short stories by agatha christie. i guess it's time to go back to good old mysteries after a couple weeks of reading mushy, fluffy fanfiction. i still have seven books waiting to be read. at least as far as i know it's seven.

writing: this as always. and yeah, yeah, those two fanfiction. been just too busy that my brain is too fried at the end of the day to get the creative writing juices flowing.

listening: to tanikala by munimuni. i just found out about this band this morning on the way to church. the intro initially made me think of ben&ben until i searched for the song online by its lyrics. the song totally fits today's rainy weather. and i love how it sounds very much like para sa tao by humanfolk. am not so much for very new-decade-in-the-new-millennium music but this one is an exception. the melody as well as the vocals are very millennial sounding to this old timer's ears but that's just me. tanikala has made it to my 2019 playlist that's for sure.

thinking: about oh, so many things that i'm already dreaming about them. why can't i retreat into my dream world where i can control most of what happens in it, and that it isn't invaded by everyday things???

smelling: the fresh scent of rain.

wishing: the weekend would just last a little longer so i could wrap myself up in my furry blanket like a burrito and just stay horizontal until next year. guess i'm that exhausted.

wearing: sleep clothes.

loving: the rainy weekend when i can spend most of my time lying on the couch or my bed just hugging my pillow and taking five-hour naps to the sound of the rain falling on the tin roof.

wanting: to watch the final stage of le tour de france. unfortunately they will be starting at 6.05pm, which means will be already midnight here, which means i'll already be sleeping, which means i'll be missing egan bernal and the rest of team ineos doing their traditional champagne toast while cycling in a horizontal line, which means i'm left...

feeling: disappointed that i will miss egan bernal's victory ride in paris tonight. while i haven't been able to follow this year's tour that much, i was still able to catch the last few stages. i find it really impressive that bernal, the guy who wears the white jersey for the best young rider under 26, was able to get the yellow jersey from julian alaphilippe in last friday's stage just before it was cancelled due to bad weather. can't help but feel bad for alaphilippe as well. seems like he had a hard time in those mountain stages. and it's been a long time since a french cyclist won the tour. maybe next time. but for now, bravo to egan bernal for winning this year's tour de france!

needing: to catch the replay on eurosport tomorrow. hehehe.

Sunday, 30 June 2019

sunday currently vol.40

reading: regina rising by wendy toliver. it's the second book from the once upon a time tv series tie-up that i bought, the first one being red's untold story which i finished earlier this year. just yesterday i finished the complete zero line chronicles of the endgame series by james frey. and before that, the dubplexity books 1 and 2 by amy k. nichols, now that you're here and while you were gone. i would just like to chronicle in here that i've been really very good in keeping my promise of not buying new books while i haven't finished the ones on my book pile (to keep) except during the big bad wolf sale last february, when i bought red's untold tale, and last march, when i bought regina rising. but after that i set out on reading each and every book i bought from booksale and so happy that i finished two before the books mentioned here.

writing: this. duh! and that fanfic. would you believe it?! and oh yeah just a little side note, i wrote and finished a fanfic last may. that was easier to write since it was only a one-shot. and now i'm stuck writing another one-shot and even if it's been weeks since i started it, i'm confident that i'll be able to publish it soon. but not that fanfic yet.

listening to: nothing.

thinking: about a lot of things that needed to be accomplished at work. man, it's been just a three measly months since i started there full time but it certainly felt like years.

smelling: nothing.

wishing: i could be at the beach. summer has come and gone and i haven't even sank my toes into the warm sand. but anyway, the rainy season has started in earnest and i also wish that it's raining tonight. had a great nap yesterday afternoon because i wrapped myself and my favourite fluffy pillow in a fluffy blanket like a burrito while the rain was gently falling. not really a fan of rain but this old girl can enjoy it from time to time.

wearing: glasses, sleep shirt because come on i always write this thing just before bedtime.

loving: the fresh scent that rain brings.

wanting: my brain to shut off on demand and let me sleep in peace.

needing: to relax.

feeling: like i want to sleep for a year.

the year that was

ok, first things first. one year and two days after my hyperthyroidism diagnosis, i am finally, totally, absolutely free from taking meds again. what a birthday gift! praise the Lord for that! as i have mentioned in a previous post related to my journey with hyperthyroidism, or graves' disease (creepy name if you ask me), my ft3, ft4 and tsh levels have normalised on my 5th month of treatment and have been that way since. my doctor has closely monitored my progress at roughly every 2 1/2 months since may of 2018.

there have been no updates since my last check-up last december because the verdict from my two subsequent check-ups were practically the same except for the dosage which changed to once a week. but in my most recent check up last may, my doctor finally said that i am not to take any more medication and man, saying that i'm so happy is the understatement of the year. i am elated. over the moon. i am grateful.

i don't think i will ever forget it, all the dramatics, histrionics, and all. not since the two months of enduring by myself the general weakness that left me quite useless, extreme weight loss, mood swings (which i think are normal anyway lol) and extra ailments such as the two-hour nightly fevers, tonsil stones and anaemia before the official diagnosis. i will not delve into why i did not see a doctor immediately, although around late february to early march, i went to an ent because of a throat ailment which turned out to be tonsil stones. it went away after a week of antibiotics, but not the swelling in my neck area so i thought it wasn't really tonsil stones to begin with. of course they weren't. cos by then it was my thyroid beginning to swell.

i've also been experiencing anaemia around the same time, which really didn't help much with my arnis training at some point. that some point being training to become a yellow belt in march 2018. thank goodness the promotion itself went really great.

after that high, however, things began to go haywire in my system. i began to tire more easily and those anaemic episodes and fevers became more frequent that i chugged biogesic each night. my appetite began to wane. and i stopped attending arnis training from the second saturday of april onwards because i simply had no energy to do anything. i know i mentioned something about being tired all the time in one of my past sunday currently posts.

even a simple commute to meet a friend became really difficult. i normally take the stairs to get to the ticket office at the mrt station but on that day, i almost fainted at the top step. and then i had to go down and take the bus instead because the line to get to the platform was long and i had no patience for that. the bus was full but i didn't care anymore and sat on the step just before the last row. when i finally got a proper seat, i laid on the three-seater row face down and stayed that way until my stop. stopped over at jollibee for a cheeseburger since i thought it was because i didn't have breakfast before leaving the house. finishing that one small burger was a chore though. getting food into me for that matter regardless of the mealtime was a chore anyhow because all i wanted was to lie down and i had no appetite whatsoever.

it was on that day as well that my friend commented on me losing weight, and i attributed it to my training in arnis. i even drank sprite to alleviate the nausea. but one sunday after that, around late april to early may, my cousin and tita were so surprised to see that i've lost so much weight. attributing it to arnis training doesn't seem feasible anymore since by then i wasn't attending training.

several diagnoses by non-doctors aka my mum and aunts helped none. tb and diabetes were the worst. my mum and i even went to this doctor who came highly recommended by a friend but i don't think it was a good idea in hindsight. to each their own, i guess. then, a doctor who is a family friend of hours said that it might be dehydration after consulting with him. he also recommended a cbc which confirmed anaemia. but it was my mum who adamantly told me to finally add a blood test for ft3, ft4 and tsh because she herself had hyperthyroidism some decades back. i remember that aside from the weight loss, i don't think my mum exhibited any other symptoms of it such as bulging eyes. in my case i didn't have that symptom at all, just the weakness/fatigue, loss of appetite, and severe weight loss.

so...

official diagnosis: 3rd week of may 2018
doctor set out the ground rules.
1. i was to take four kinds of medication: iron for my anaemia, a kind of steroid that i forgot its purpose, some other tablet to slow down my heartbeat, and tapazole to stop my overactive thyroid gland from producing too much thyroid hormones.
2. dietary restrictions were made. no eating food in which iodised salt has been used, no seafood, no eggplant, no egg yolk, and... NO DAIRY. i had no problems with eating savoury food since we cook using rock salt anyway, and seafood at home was and still is pretty rare except for the occasional bangus and homemade tuna spread. am not even a fan of eggplant even if i learned to eat it a little more than a decade ago. the only restrictions i had a beef with was the no yolk and no dairy part. funny how the first thing that came to mind when i heard that was, "no more pastries and other creamy desserts?! nooo!" the second being, "what the heck am i going to eat now?" third: "you mean to say i can't eat out anymore?!" my appetite may have been non-existent, but to me food is really important, especially my favourite comfort foods which happen to be mostly made of whole eggs and dairy.
3. check-ups almost every two weeks for the first few months were a must. taxing if you don't have an hmo to cover the costs.

there was no mistaking the drama that went on after that. from choking on my medicine (yeah so arte i know) to having mini internal temper tantrums because i had to limit my food intake to those that are ok to eat... ok, ok, because i can't have pizza, so there; to literally crying that i wish i had dehydration instead of hyperthyroidism because it seemed easier to treat (although it might have been as expensive). doc even suggested that i could have my tonsils taken out because a week after taking medication i had another fever scare. the only different with this one was that it happened in the afternoon, and come evening i was ok again. another blood test confirmed infection that i had to take a new set of meds that won't affect my taking the current meds at the time.

also that time did i feel my body start to respond to the medication. there were hunger pangs two hours after meals so i had to eat more. i remedied the concern while in church service by bringing a pancake or two that i ate just outside the sanctuary.

speaking of pancakes, right after my diagnosis i immediately researched for recipes of my favourite foods that don't include egg yolks and dairy. paleo and vegan recipes bounced out the web pages i visited. breakfast was my main challenge because i grew up eating sandwiches for breakfast and continue to do so up to now. upon checking the ingredients of our store-bought bread, it is made with iodised salt along with other dry goods from the grocery. so i had pancakes made out of sweet potato, flour, egg white, almond milk or coconut milk for weeks until i got tired of it and made skillet bread instead.

in short, i really adjusted my diet according to the restrictions given in the name of getting well fast. some of my carbo repertoire also include home made mojos which turned out oh-so-yummy if i do say so myself. there's also homemade granola, energy bites, and oats and champorado splashed with almond milk which is quite expensive and of course the taste i'm used to is not what it is with almond milk. another would be coconut cream crepes with vanilla custard for a going-away party. even went as far as making my own peanut butter and ice cream with frozen bananas as base. all the food i made were largely tweaked when it comes to the ingredients.

my strength returned gradually, with no more anaemic episodes and was able to walk a little faster without getting tired. the hunger pangs that came two hours after meals eventually disappeared and my appetite became normal again. all these just a few weeks after taking medication with lots and lots of prayers from everyone we knew.

attend arnis training again: 1st saturday of july
i did not overexert myself for the first few weeks since returning, and then i really came back full force with guns blazing. i already missed two months of training by then and from that time on i only missed one or two training days up until this year that i had to test for my green belt earlier this summer. got my green belt, thank God, and man was it so satisfying. an early birthday gift, if you will. being able to achieve the rank of Sulong was really meaningful. and now i'm on to becoming a Tagapagsanay.

short reprieve from all dietary restrictions: 2nd week of july
i have rambled all about this in my july post last year. read if you dare.

next check-up: august
by this time my ft3, ft4 and tsh have all normalised. meaning i have responded that quickly to the medication, which led to...

the "highly unusual but not impossible" line: september check-up
because my levels were still in the normal zones. same treatment scheme but without the steroid, heart medication and iron anymore, just the tapazole. i think i already graduated from the steroid and heart medication sometime in june. anyway by this time, i was now allowed to eat the restricted foods in moderation. like, yay! doc also lowered my med intake to 3x a week.

october:
looking back at the timeline, i just noticed that all my check-ups were short of two months apart. i thought by this time, i thought the next follow-up from my last check-up in september would be in december. but nope, it was still october but then again, this time i had NO MORE DIETARY RESTRICTIONS. best pre-christmas gift ever, just in time for noche buena! hehe!

december - february:
same dosage and no dietary restrictions.

march - may:
doc lowered the dosage to once a week! i was also advised to take an additional blood test to the usual, called anti-tpo that measures the possibility of being constantly within normal levels, or the possibility of going back to hyper or down to hypo instead. well...

by may, even the anti-tpo is within normal levels, therefore no more medication to take!!! thank God!

of course there's still the follow-up to do but it will be 3 months from now. hopefully when this hits the 18-month mark i'll be totally off follow-ups that are quite near each other. 6 months or longer.

i thank God for everything that i learned this past year. of myself, of others who prayed for me ceaselessly, of God. i don't think i could have made it past through all the melodrama i mostly created and never showed anyone except to a select group of people.

weekend randoms

how annoyingly hilarious it is that i decided to wear my ballet flats again on a day that the weather decided it's a good day to rain buckets.

yep. after their soles being flattened further by the alay lakad-esque journey weeks ago, my ballet flats have become sodden by the sudden downpour a couple of weeks ago.

it'll be a long time before i decide to wear them again. and this time make sure it's a hot, hot, hot, hot day with no chance of rain if i ever do.

and that i have a car when i wear it.

ha.

=======================

so far this is the weekend i've spent most of the time horizontal than upright. the stress of travelling to and from makati is taking its toll on this old girl. no matter how many people say you'd have to adjust, it's life, don't be too maarte, blah, blah, blahhhhh, i say nah. there's nothing pleasant about going there via the godforsaken highway called edsa. and that is the truth. gone are the days when it only took 20-30 minutes to get there via public transportation.

at any rate, it was really tiring that i didn't even go to arnis training yesterday as well as the event in the afternoon. i literally spent the whole day on the couch and in bed. it was the same thing today.

man i really need fresh air stat.

;))

how darkly hilarious is it that my blithe description of the week after the relaxing holiday as a deluge came true. i always call the week a deluge since there's nothing peaceful about metro manila except on sundays and holidays just like the holy week. yet last april 22 came a greater deluge at 5.11pm in the form of a 5.7 (some say 6.1) magnitude earthquake which rattled some provinces in luzon, metro manila included.

much like the 1990 earthquake which will forever be etched in my memory, the quake 2 weeks ago had its scary moments as well. all the while the earth shook, i was on the 22nd floor with a couple of other office mates huddled under our respective tables. one was calling out for Jesus repeatedly while the other one spat out the same curse word over and over. as for me i stayed silent but imagining the worst, like how would it feel like should our building collapse and i prayed to God that if it would happen, it would be quick and painless.

of course we were all safe, thank goodness. yet the deluge was not over since almost everyone was raring to go home. the trains weren't 't running yet again, thus all the buses were full and more crowds filled the sidewalks of edsa on both sides waiting patiently for whatever ride that was available.

waiting wasn't an option for me, nor is getting squished in a bus along with the masses. no, siree. traffic was practically at a standstill as well, so the next best (and pathetic) option was to walk. yup, i walked the length of edsa from the entrance of dasma village up to robinson's galleria along with a lot of people who made the same decision. it took me about two hours, the same length of time if i took the bus on a normal, traffic jam-filled day.

it was not a pleasant walk along edsa, which is much like walking along any other place in the metro that's not ayala, ortigas, bgc, eastwood, and the like. there are the uneven sidewalks, potholes, choking smoke galore from all the vehicles; damp, smelly corners, you name it, everything's there. but it was either that or endure a sardine-like bus ride i had no patience for at the moment. halfway through my journey i was already tiring and was convinced that i've worn holes through the soles of my ballet flats, since i could practically feel the uneven cement under my feet.

but safely get home i did, and that's all that matters. the soles of my flats were intact, too. after that day, however, i wore more functional shoes to work in case something like this happens again.

i hope i won't ever use them for that kind of purpose though.

:)

this year's holy week has been one of the most restful times i've had so far this year. and by far the most memorable and enjoyable.

stretching out on the couch while enjoying, nay, revelling in the silence of my surroundings never felt oh, so good. way better than going out of the metro with the rest of the populace to any mountain or beach resort this time of year. granted, there are still a lot who have the same thinking as my family has, but the population still decreased significantly like it always does. however i am in that place right now where i don't want tomorrow's deluge to come. which naturally happens when all good things are at an end. so i'm milking the dregs again of this glorious peaceful atmosphere.

tinkering on my toy piano (electronic keyboard, actually) like there's no tomorrow was fun. piano pieces learned decades past came back to me bit by bit, as well as a renewed effort to continue playing the piano by learning new pieces. i am so rusty already to begin with, but am glad am still able to play the simple pieces i've learned long ago.

two straight days of arnis training were a big help this holiday, considering that these two days might be the last time i get to practise for next weekend's gathering. i really hope and pray that i would be able to get that green belt.

while my family didn't plan on leaving manila, we did go on an outing to antipolo to see the hinulugang taktak (waterfalls) and visit some relatives there. we left at lunch time so we stopped by tapsi ni vivian. it's my first time to eat there and i so loved the tapsilog. the fried egg was done just right, the garlic fried rice had just the right texture: not too dry, not too malata; and the beef tapa was tender and on the sweet side, which i like.

hinulugang taktak is one of the attractions in antipolo, so much so that a song was written about it. it is beautiful and the area is clean and well-maintained albeit the lack of trash cans, with cabanas that dot the side of the stream. there is also a sort of a view deck with monobloc chairs where people can sit and enjoy the view. but what broke my heart is the fact that the place doesn't smell fresh at all. maybe this could be the next clean-up project of the government. and that's all i'll say about that because the rest of the trip is as pleasant as can be, with me lounging on the hammock the rest of that afternoon in my tita's garden, revelling in the silence (duh), daydreaming, gazing at the shattering blue of the sky while eating cold kaimito and toasted siopao.

i never left the hammock except to visit another relative who lives in the same subdivision, and then when it became too dark and the mosquitoes were starting to feast on my legs.

good friday might just be the best time of the lot. spent most of the day doing whatever came to mind, which mostly involved stretching out on the couch. haha. but come evening time, finally met up with a school friend whom i've been chatting with for some months. funny how we say meet up for coffee but end up getting other items instead. my friend had the pomegranate iced tea while i had my usual hot chocolate but what the hey. great conversation even if it's just for about an hour. then, said friend dropped me off at bgc where i met up with my family for dinner. the temperature had dropped slightly as the night went on, which made for a pleasant walk. a good friday indeed.

that day also added three new songs to my playlist:
di na muli by itchyworms
kahit ayaw mo na by this band
buwan by juan karlos

di na muli is my favourite among the three so i'm putting it here. i love the video. don't know why this song puts a silly grin on my face though.

so yup. this is definitely one of the times i enjoy living in metro manila.

random hits

the first quarter of this year has been a season of new beginnings and goodbyes. one such goodbye was bittersweet, as i've found this person to be a kindred spirit. the short time that we've been together was really fun and one that i'll remember for all time. i also appreciate that this person took notice of my ultimate LSS and played it not once, but twice. the first one being the time when i had to do something that's not my cup of tea. the fact that she remembered it and played it before i left really encouraged this old girl. the second time was when we danced to the song's version by manhattan transfer on her last day. it really gave out the meredith-cristina feels, when these two best friends danced it out on cristina's last day at grey-sloan memorial. wishing this friend of mine all the best as she embarks on a new life journey really soon.

=================

my fangirl heart has taken quite a lot of hits the first quarter of 2019 as well. first was kalafina's disbandment. i should have known this was coming eventually after keiko left the group last year. somehow kalafina wouldn't be complete anyway without any of them, in fact. so as of late i've been treating myself with their songs from over ten years ago. hikaru, wakana, and keiko might have gone their separate ways, but their music lives on. wishing them all the best in their new paths.

next was the passing of luke perry. he was one of my favourite actors back when i was a kid watching beverly hills 90210. i rooted for his character dylan and brenda (shannen doherty) eons ago, and was really mad at kelly for getting between them. the nerve! hehe. haven't really followed his career after that but am glad that he was still in show business when i saw him guest star in one of law and order: svu's episodes some seasons ago. the fact that he's loved by many really warms the heart.

not long after that, i read about whoopi goldberg coming back to the view after a really bad bout with pneumonia. my fangirl heart stopped a bit right there at the thought of my favourite silver screen nun's close call. and then not long after that, saw on entertainment tonight that alex trebek has pancreatic cancer. jeopardy is one of my fave shows growing up, and am glad when i just recently saw alex on tv up and about, announcing that a new season of jeopardy is in the works. good news.

my heart did a jig when stephen amell and david ramsey posted on instagram their traditional photo of announcing a new season of arrow. eighth season! wow! unfortunately the excitement was short-lived as a couple of months after that announcement, saw the caption on stephen's facebook live video that says 'All good things...' well, my heart stopped at that as well and then i knew before even watching the whole thing on the bus going home from work (yeah, as if i'm ever going to forget that useless little factoid), that season 8 was going to be the last one and that just a few episodes will be done. argh. and as if that wasn't enough, just a couple of weeks ago emily bett rickards posted a cute little poem about her and felicity. season 7 is going to be her last season on arrow and no, this fangirl can't take any more farewell hits.

show business and real life alike.

sunday currently vol. 39

reading: just finished reading still house pond a couple of days ago, and now i'm back to reading some fluffy fanfics i've bookmarked. so i just looked at my book pile and on top is the story keeper by lisa wingate, and i was a few chapters in it before i started on once upon a time: red's untold story and then still house pond. i've finished the two latter books but not the story keeper yet so will go back to that by this week.

writing: this. duh! and that fanfic. yeah.

listening to: nothing.

thinking: about tomorrow, the weeks ahead, the extra training i have to undergo before the belting, and that how fast the time flies for tomorrow it's freaking april already. i do believe my bro and i were just at my cousin's birthday dinner yesterday when in fact that was in the first half of february. and at that time we thought that our new year's family reunion was just the day prior our cousin's birthday.

smelling: nothing. but thank God i got over my cold already.

wishing: i could be at the beach.

wearing: glasses, big yellow shirt, shorts.

loving: any time that i could get for myself.

wanting: that green belt in arnis of course. which is why i will try to gun for an extra training day during weekdays.

needing: to relax.

feeling: like i want to go to bed already even after taking a nap this afternoon.

==================

major throwback feels when i revisited an old blog of mine. major cringefest as well as i read some twelve to thirteen-year-old entries haha. i had a golden year in blogging then and it was in 2007, when my food and travel blog began to pick up and i met a lot of awesome people online with similar interests. some of them i met personally, and up until now we've remained friends. those i haven't met in person, we've moved on to being friends on fb. it was a grand time indeed.

and in reading that old blog reminded me of a song entitled Romance for Journey by Daishi Dance, a dj from japan. it's from his first album The P.I.A.N.O Set and it's the first song of his that i fell in love with that same year. i remember just chilling in my cousin's bedroom one spring day in Florida, emailing some friends as i listened to random songs in radioblogclub. one moment i was composing a novel-like email, and then my ears caught the most melodious sound the next. needless to say, Romance for Journey was my song of the year back in 2007 and forever will remain one of my favourite songs.

have a listen, of course!

sunday currently vol. 38

reading: still still house pond by jan watson. haven't got much time lately, but i read when i can. still house pond is an easy read, and there's a twist somewhere there.

writing: this. and a bit of the fanfiction i'm desperately trying to finish. but really, it's still in the beginning stages. hay life. hehe.

listening to: nothing.

thinking: about my current state. harhar.

smelling: nothing. my nose is still clogged but not as bad as last weekend.

wishing: i could be at the beach.

wearing: glasses, white shirt with folded sleeves and jean shorts. just came home from a family merienda cena.

loving: any time that i could get for myself.

wanting: that green belt in arnis of course.

needing: to declog my nose.

feeling: it's either this or that way, it's one way or the other. it could be one direction, it could be on reflection... yeah any enya fan would get this. but that song perfectly captures my state right now. so what am i doing still typing other stuff when i could just have typed the whole song instead of this entry, yea? oh. and like my heart's in my throat.

thanks to siddathornton for this great idea.

sunday currently vol. 37

reading: still house pond by jan watson.

writing: this.

listening to: shut up and dance by walk the moon. part of my 2015 playlist that holds oh, so many memories. it's the first song in playlist 1 in the flight attendant panel.

thinking: about oh, so many things. as usuaaaaalllll. if thoughts are literally volatile, my head would have exploded eons ago.

smelling: nothing. my nose is clogged.

wishing: today is the day i could go on that cross-country driving in the states with my mum and tita emma.

wearing: glasses, loose top and my ever-present cycling shorts. duh! kailangan pa bang i-memorise yan?!

loving: sleep. but i hate that i had to get sick just to get eight-plus hours of uninterrupted sleep. but still good that i got that. best example was last night, got ten hours! ok, around one and a half hours of sleep, woke for a bit to use the loo and once back in bed, out like a light eight hours after. woohoooo

wanting: that green belt in arnis. as i only have one day of training each week, it's up to me to practise the parts that need more improvement... heavy task, but can do!

needing: to declog my nose.

feeling: better than the past two miserable days of cold.

thanks to siddathornton for this great idea.

sunday currently vol. 36

reading: still a daughter's choice. just a few more pages to go can't wait to finish it tonight.

writing: this and still that fanfiction that i've gotten nowhere with. still hoping to finish it because i think it's too funny. but i have to think of how to solve that conflict in the story and that's what's been evading me for weeeeeeeeeks.

listening to: nothing but i'm simultaneously watching a show on nhk world called hometown stories.

thinking: the life my paternal lola (grandmother) had led. this afternoon was spent with the family of lola's cousin/bff who came home from the states for a visit. shortly after having merienda (afternoon snack generally), we watched a video made for the 90th birthday of lola's cousin. it showed practically all the family photos dating from the 1870s. watching that got me thinking of my own lola's history which i learned more about back in 2000 on a trip to culion, palawan, where she spent much of her childhood. i had to ask my pa about that again going home tonight and i was able to understand it more than when i first heard it 19 years ago. won't delve too much about that here as the events are just too precious for me to write about just now. all i can say is that it's been one interesting life which explained why i grew up having to explain why i look the way i do but i'm not what i look like.

smelling: nothing

wishing: everything will fall into place. there hasn't been any formality yet but i hope the one i'm currently praying for will be set in stone whatever the outcome.

wearing: glasses, loose top and my ever-present cycling shorts. duh! lol.

loving: nothing materially speaking.

wanting: to go get that green belt. last sunday my coach sent a message to all who wanted to get promoted this coming april. of course i messaged him my intent and i was surprised that he told me to test for the green belt, which is a level above blue. blue comes after yellow which i am now. blue is good but of course aim for green! that is my battle cry until the end of april. hehehe.

needing: ten hours of uninterrupted, restful sleep every day.

feeling: still quite exhausted after ten straight days of work. given that two of those days were during the weekend, but the thing is that i didn't get to rest properly.

thanks to siddathornton for this great idea.

sunday currently vol. 35

update first!
doc finally lowered the med dosage to 2x a week. what a relief. on the flipside, i have gained weight steadily since last december. eep! even before the check up i could already feel my jeans becoming snug once again. double eep! my only comfort is that my present weight is the same as from my flying days but still.

i think i want to blame exhaustion for my ravenous appetite these past few weeks. travelling to and from makati is no laughing matter to this old timer. gone are the days when travel time from let's say greenhills to makati med while riding the love bus only ranged from 20-30 minutes. and that's just by taking public transportation. going there by car took less.

at any rate, am still grateful that hyperthyroidism is going to be a thing of the past really soon.

================

reading: still a daughter's choice. haven't gotten much reading this past week.

writing: this and still that fanfiction that i've gotten nowhere with. hoping to finish it. when that would be i have no idea. i guess by now it's obvious i haven't had any downtime except for sleep, glorious sleep. and a little bit of arnis.

listening to: lucky by kat edmonson. this song holds a special place in my heart as it reminds me of my flying days, horrible and heavenly ones alike. so love the stanza that goes,

so cast your troubles into the sky
they can be the stars in our eyes
and we can count them all another day
from far away.

thinking: about the future. naks.

smelling: nothing

wishing: everything will fall into place.

wearing: glasses, striped green, brown, blue and white shirt, and... navy blue shorts. no cycling shorts this time lol!

loving: nothing materially speaking.

wanting: to try out the newly-opened 1919 grand cafe in the old hsbc building in binondo. my nerdy heart is giddy at this because a lot of changes had happened since my first bindondo traipses. ten years ago, i was in that area for my birthday to explore the old, practically abandoned building beside it called el hogar filipino. both buildings looked decrepit then and then through the years that followed they looked the same whenever i visited that little strip of juan luna street. not too long ago el hogar was in danger of demolition but fortunately it was stopped. i have no other updates regarding its restoration or God forbid its eventual demolition. i await with bated breath on that. meanwhile, after passing through the area a couple of weeks before, i was pleasantly surprised at the big change that the old hsbc building underwent. it has been restored beautifully and now its first establishment, the 1919 grand cafe, had opened its doors november of last year. i took a photo of the door back in 2009 and when i visit the place again soon, another photo of it will definitely be taken. and that's the only 10-year challenge i care about. ohh fun fact. the old hsbc building was used as backdrop for sitti's music video para sa akin. heehee.

needing: ten hours of uninterrupted, restful sleep every day.

feeling: quite rested after a three-day weekend.

thanks to siddathornton for this great idea.

Sunday, 27 January 2019

sunday currently vol.34

reading: still a daughter's choice. haven't gotten much reading in this week as i've been one busy old gal.

writing: this and still that fanfiction that i've gotten nowhere with. hoping to finish it. when that would be i have no idea.

listening to: songs for carmella by christina perri on spotify.  again. hehe.

thinking: about a job offer i got last week.

smelling: cigarette smoke from the workers. i don't like the smell at all.

wishing: everything will fall into place.

wearing: glasses, yellow t-shirt... the ever-present cycling shorts. nyahaha

loving: nothing materially speaking.

wanting: to snack on something.

needing: more days in the weekend and sleep.

feeling: exhausted yet relieved that the past week is over. overwhelmed with amazement and joy that i was able to power through it and deliver the first assignment nicely. preparing myself for this coming week.

thanks to siddathornton for this great idea.

Sunday, 20 January 2019

sunday currently vol. 33

welcome to the first sunday currently for this year, dear hapless reader who just happened to stumble upon this little slice of the www.

reading: just finished reading finally london encore, book 7 of the zion covenant series. also finished reading three books by enid blyton, so thoughtfully published as an omnibus: the naughtiest girl collection featuring the first three books in the series. the naughtiest girl in the school, the naughtiest girl again, and the naughtiest girl is a monitor. as the titles suggest, it's all about the naughtiest girl you could ever meet in your lifetime. each book is published in the 1940s but the omnibus edition came out in 2012, with a colourful, quirky cover art. the cover itself as well as the titles should make for a really light read, but the stories of the other children that elizabeth allen (the naughtiest girl) encountered in her private school are quite heavy. i will dedicate another post for this as a not-so-much-as-a-review because i have a lot to say about this. ANYWAY. my actual current read is a daughter's choice by june francis. it's about a teen who discovers her true parentage and... i still have to read the rest. what i can say about this is that the plot is normal stuff in pinoy soaps. but i have to continue to see if it remains so until the end.

writing: this and... another fanfiction which hit a rut. hehehe.

listening to: songs for carmella by christina perri on spotify. i have been christina perri's fan since jar of hearts's release and a proud one. hers is a voice so natural and pure, she never needs autotune for any of her songs. i love her voice range as well. the high notes are on point and to me she hardly ever pushes for an extra high octave (don't get me started on this lol). in songs for carmella, it's just right for standard favourites rendered as lullabies. most of them are my favourites and i especially like the new song christina wrote especially for the super cute carmella, entitled you mean the whole wide world to me. it's super playful and invokes images of playgrounds teeming with kids. but that's just this listener. tonight you belong to me is another favourite of mine. i often that with my bro; he on the guitar and moi on the uke. all ten songs in the album are less than three minutes long but in addition to that, there are also sing-along versions of each. perfect for parents who love to sing to their children.

thinking: about too many things as usual. it's a miracle my head hasn't exploded after all these years. hohoho.

smelling: nothing.

wishing: on a falling star if there ever is one.

wearing: dark blue t-shirt and... the ever-present cycling shorts. nyahaha

loving: there's too much stuff going on in my brain i got no time to love anything. or even think of it. ohohoho.

wanting: to sell all my books. i tried asking a second-hand shop but they don't buy the kind of books i have. hope i can find a shop that will get all of them, because my to-read pile is... well, piling up again. no i never made any new year's resolution on not buying any book until i've read everything in my read pile. one unofficial resolution i did make is to read the rest of the books in the read pile this year.

needing: alam na ni Lord yun.

feeling: like my heart is in my throat. or i wanna barf. because there are so many things to do this week and i just hope i'm up to the challenge.

thanks to siddathornton for this great idea.

:)

can't believe another year has flown by just like that. and what a year that was. how surprising that i still found it to be a good year despite the major health issues and such.

it's still quiet due to the extended holiday. i am milking the dregs of the beautiful silence it brings until tomorrow's chaos deems it null.

i'm having separation anxiety. then life goes on until the next wonderful, fluffy, fuzzy Christmas holidays.

happy new year, yo.

sunday currently vol. 61

Currently... reading: Serena on Webtoon.  writing: this. i'm not holding my breath for when i will finally write a decent paragraph that...
